The BCCI selection committee has announced the Indian team for the three-match ODI and five-match T20 series against Australia, starting October 19. Shubman Gill has been named the new ODI captain. The BCCI made this decision at a selection meeting led by chairman Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Gill has played 55 ODIs so far, scoring 2,775 runs and eight centuries.
With this change, Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain. Rohit Sharma last captained India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, where India won the title. Shubman Gill, who was appointed Test captain earlier this year, is now seen as a potential captain for India in all formats. Under Gill’s leadership, India drew 2-2 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and impressed critics with their strong batting performance in the series.
Virat and Rohit Return
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in India’s ODI squad. Both last played in the Champions Trophy final. Now, they are ready to play for India again in Australia.
Jadeja, Bumrah, and Hardik Out
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are not in the ODI squad for this series. However, Bumrah is still in the T20 squad. Hardik Pandya is left out of both ODI and T20 squads.
Two New Players in ODIs
Two new players have joined the ODI squad: Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. The T20 squad has no big changes. The Asia Cup squad is mostly retained, with Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing Hardik Pandya.
